M_Zatko: Zatko Family Name/Podvazs

My grandfather, Stefan Zatko, came to US from Podvazs, Hungary in 1906 at the age of 17. My father was young when my grandfather passed away and he does not rememmber any mention of family left behind so we do not know anything, although ship records indicate that he was to stay with a brother-in-law named Yohann Duris. Therefore, I assume he had a sister who was married to Duris.

Does anyone know where I might begin to look for any records in Slovakia if my grandfather came from Podwazs? My search has really just begun and I do not know much about the history or geography of this region.

Thanks in advance for any info which may help.

ZATKO and DURIS do show up in SK's phone book.

Click on Trencsen megye as you will find Podvasz on that map.
Podvasz, Trencsen megye is Podvazie now part of town of Pruske.
Pruske is in area code/UTO 042 of www.zoznamst.sk Both surnames list in this area code but none in Pruske.

Your ancestor, Stefan ZAT'KO was going to a brother-in-law Stefan HOLIC'EK, Leechburg, Pa
HOLIC'EK does list in Bohunice also now a part of Pruske.

There were 2 Podvázs in Hungary, both in Tencsén County:

Podvázs aka Vágalja, Tencsén County, Vágbesztercze District, Hungary, today in Slovakia it's name was Podvažie † >> now part of Považská Bystrica[SL]/Vágbeszterce{HU}.

Podvázs or Szavcsina-Podvázs aka Vágpart, Tencsén County, Pu(c)hó District, Hungary, today in Slovakia it's name was Savčina-Podvažie † >> now part of Pruské[SL]/Pruszka or Poroszka[HU].

So, I would start with the right one, if can't determine which then research both:

The R.Cath records of Podvázs/Vágalja was under Kis-Jeszenicz[HU]/Malá Jasenica[SL], Podvázs/Vágpart under Pruszka[HU]/Pruské[SL}:

You might have something there. I was only looking in Pruske (Podvazie) being that Radix suggested for this query. It would seem that ZATKO list in Povazska Bystrica's phone book. Of course, the poster needs to find some US document that will provide another clue as which of Podvazie he was from.
